3 Mood Boosting Supplements

mood boosting supplements

This week we’re talking about getting and maintaining happier moods.  Hopefully you got some good ideas from our mood booster list.

There are times when we could use some additional help (i.e. we’re under extreme stress, our hormones are out of whack, etc.). While supplements are not the answer to our problems, they can provide our bodies with additional support during times of stress (in addition to a healthy diet).

Here are my top 3 recommendations for mood boosting supplements:

1. Theanine SereneTheanine Serene

This is a relaxing cocktail of minerals, amino acids, and soothing herbs.  It contains magnesium, which is known as the “anti-stress mineral.”  Many people are deficient in this essential mineral, which is responsible for so many different functions in the body, including regulating cortisol (our stress hormone).  Theanine Serene also contains taurine and l-theanine, two amino acids known for creating a calming effect in the body, as well as GABA, a natural neurotransmitter that elevates serotonin levels. And it contains the herb Holy Basil, which has been used for centuries to treat symptoms of anxiety and stress.

This is a helpful supplement to take when you want to ease nervous stress and maintain a focused calm.  If you find that it makes you sleepy, either cut the dose in half, or try taking at night.  And because it’s all-natural, you don’t have to worry about it becoming habit forming or causing an imbalance in your serotonin levels.  This is a great supplement for easing stress and boosting moods.

2. ReloraRelora

Relora is a plant extract that has been studied for its use to relieve stress and combat stress-induced eating.  It has been shown to help regulate cortisol levels, which become imbalanced during times of stress.  This supplement has been recommended by numerous naturopathic doctors for addressing adrenal fatigue.  It does not cause drowsiness, making it an ideal supplement for daytime use. Typically, when you’re suffering with adrenal fatigue, your cortisol levels are low in the morning and high at night (the opposite of what they should be).  Relora can help to boost levels in the morning, which will help to boost your mood and energy levels.

3. 5-HTP

5-HTP5-HTP stands for l-5-Hydroxytryptophan, which is a form of the amino acid tryptophan that can be easily converted to serotonin. Serotonin is one of our body’s neurotransmitters, or chemical messengers.  When serotonin levels are low, you may experience anxiety, blue moods, and the desire to eat more carbohydrates.  5-HTP can naturally boost these levels with nutrients your body needs.  5-HTP is a great choice if you find that your addicted to carbohydrates and tend to “stress eat.”  Many people have reported that it really helps to curb their cravings and help prevent overeating.  This is a particularly helpful supplement to boost moods and prevent cravings during “that time of the month.”

What’s your favorite natural remedy to beat stress and boost your mood?
