Ok y’all, don’t shoot me for this post! I know many of you probably wear an Apple watch, fitbit or some other electronic device, and my goal of this post is not to make you feel bad or ditch them altogether. I simply want to share why I’ve chosen not to wear these devices and offer some (hopefully) helpful tips for those of you who do!
Apple Watches and Fitbits boast of variety of convenient and informative functions for the user – everything from how many steps you take a day to your sleep patterns to receiving texts and calls. And many people love having this information not just at their fingertips, but on their wrists.
And while I think these devices are super cute (don’t you love all the different watch bands you can get?) and can offer lots of convenience for the user, I’ve decided to opt out of using these uber popular devices. Here are a few reasons:
This Technology is still Very New
One of the main attractions to using these devices today (including iphones, bluetooth, and other wireless devices) is that they use wireless internet connections. Wifi, or ‘wireless fidelity’ is what allows us to access the internet, receive texts, check social media, email, call, etc. from anywhere in the world! Wireless technology uses electromagnetic as well as radio frequency energy, which is a type of non-ionizing radiation. While this might not be as dangerous as other types of radiation, scientists continue to study the long-term health effects of low-level radiation from wireless technology. Even as we speak, we’ve already moved from 4G technology to 5G, which more than likely increases these EMFs. So, I guess I’m just too chicken to have a device that is emitting radiation (even at low levels) strapped to my body all day long!
They Can Lead to Health Problems
If you’ve been dealing with unexplained health issues and wear one of these devices, you may want to take a closer look. Studies have shown that EMF radiation can cause (to name a few):
- Headaches
- Hormonal Imbalances
- Sleep Disturbances
- Weakened Immune System
- Fatigue
- Inflammation
I know of one woman who moved into a “Smart Home” with wireless technology all over the house, and she ended up dealing with a number of chronic health problems. She finally traced it to the wireless technology in the house, and they had to do some major renovations. But once they did, she saw major improvements in her health.
If You Love Your Apple Watch or FitBit…
If you want to reduce your exposure to radiation while still using these devices, here a couple things you can do:
Keep Your Watch on Airplane Mode for the majority of the time.
Placing your Apple Watch on Airplane mode disables the wireless function. This drastically reduces your exposure to radiation, and you can still access and track your health data and workouts. This also applies to your phone! At the very least, try placing your watch and phone on Airplane mode while you sleep.
Don’t wear your watch while you sleep.
If you’re trying to track sleep patterns or gather other sleep info from your apple watch, try using apps that allow you to get this information while your watch is in Airplane mode.
Try Using an EMF Harmonizer Watchband
These bands claim to “Harmonizes the EMF’s from your Apple Watch to minimize their damaging effects on your health.” You can check out this one from EMF Harmony.
Do Your Own Research
Don’t take my word for it! It’s up to you to do your own research and decide if the benefits outweigh the risks. Understand the technology you are using and the potential risks that may be involved.
It’s impossible to completely avoid radiation as it is all around us. But we can take steps to reduce and limit our exposure. For more information on the risks of electronic devices and lower EMF device options, check out the articles below.

For a sporty look, I love wearing my Casio G-Shock watch (affiliate link). It’s got the time, date, and a stop watch (which is all I really want in a watch 😁)
