Fear is born of Satan, and if we would only take time to think a moment we would see that everything Satan says is founded upon a falsehood. A.B. Simpson
We mentioned in our last post that fear is an emotion common to us all and that there is only one good kind of fear – the fear of God. So how do we combat those fears that aren’t of Him? We have to change our thinking. How do we change our thinking? We have to fill our minds with God’s Word.
One of the easiest ways I’ve found is to create Scripture pages in my prayer notebook. It’s really like creating my own concordance on certain topics. And since fear is something with which I’ve really struggled, I created a “Do not Fear” section.
When stressful situations arise, I can refer to this section of my notebook and calm my heart with the truths and promises of Scripture. This works for any life issue (anger, self-control, laziness, etc.). Whatever issue you’re facing, seek the Lord and His Word, and create your own personal arsenal of Power Verses in your notebook (I call them Power Verses, because they can truly transform you through the power of the Holy Spirit). God’s Word is not an old, outdated book of nice, moral platitudes. But it’s an inspired book that is “living and active” (Heb. 4:12). Through the power of the Holy Spirit, it can transform you – your thoughts, your attitudes, your emotions, your habits, your life!
I review the verses in my notebook frequently, praying over them, meditating on them, and memorizing them. And I am changing! I still have old and new fears creep up from time to time, but I am finding that I’m better equipped to replace them with God’s truth.
Here are some of my favorite Power Verses on fear:
“Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6
“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” Psalm 27:1
“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?” Psalm 56:3-4
“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10
“For I, the LORD your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, ‘Fear not, I am the one who helps you.’” Isaiah 41:13
“For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” 2 Timothy 1:7
What are some of your favorite verses to combat fear? I’d love to hear about them in the comment section!
