Citrus fruits are some of my favorite fruits. Their sweet and tart scents and flavors make them so uplifting and refreshing. And since I’ve been on a smoothie kick lately, I was craving a smoothie with citrus in it.
I had a number of clementines on hand (aren’t they fun?), so I peeled and quartered several of them, placed them in a ziploc bag and put them into the freezer. Several hours later they were just right for throwing into a smoothie. I was craving something with an Orange Julius flavor, but I wanted to “healthify” it. So I threw in some frozen bananas (for a creamy flavor and good dose of potassium), vanilla whey protein powder (you can read all about the health benefits of whey here) and some good ole’ fashioned orange juice.
To kick the orange flavor up a notch, I added 1 drop of wild orange essential oil. Wild orange essential oil contains potent antioxidants that fight free radicals which can damage cells. It’s also strengthens the immune system and is a natural mood-booster!*
The result? Amazing! You will not miss those other orange-flavored shakes full of who-knows-what. This is reminiscent of those orange dreamsicles with the vanilla ice-cream in the middle. But this has far less sugar and is full of protein!
*Not all essential oil brands are safe to take internally. To find out which essential oil brand I use and recommend, email me at thehealthyhappywoman@gmail.com. I would love to share with you!
