I am super excited about today’s book review, because I have been a long time fan of Dr. Axe.
Dr. Josh Axe was one of the first naturopathic doctors I discovered when I first became interested in alternative medicine. His website, books, and videos became a treasure trove of helpful information for me as I researched my own health issues.
So when his latest book, Eat Dirt, was released, I couldn’t wait to dive in.
And it did not disappoint!
Hippocrates once said, “All disease begins in the gut.” It is from this premise that Dr. Axe explains his belief that the key to our health lies in our guts.
In Eat Dirt, Dr. Axe explains how intestinal permeability (or “leaky gut”) is the root cause of a host of different health problems. He thoroughly explains what leaky gut is, how we get it, and how we can cure it.
Here are just a few of the symptoms and conditions that are linked to leaky gut:
- ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease)
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Anxiety and depression
- Autism
- Celiac disease or gluten sensitivity
- Chronic fatigue syndrome
- Fibromyalgia
- Digestive issues (IBS, Gas, Bloating, etc)
- Diabetes (Type 1 and Type 2)
- Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis
- Lupus
- Migraines
- Skin inflammation
- Ulcerative Colitis
And the list goes on.
Do you or someone you know have experience with any of these conditions? Believe it or not, these are secondary symptoms of a bigger root cause – a leaky gut.
Axe explains how if you can heal your gut with the right foods, supplements and lifestyle changes, you can heal from even the most serious health issues (he shares the plan he used with his own mother to help her overcome stage IV breast cancer that had moved into her lungs).
Knowing that every person is different, Dr. Axe divides gut problems into 5 different types:
- Candida Gut
- Stressed Gut
- Immune Gut
- Gastric Gut
- Toxic Gut
With a thorough Gut Questionnaire included, Dr. Axe helps you pinpoint exactly what kind of gut you have, and then he gives you a detailed plan of specific foods, supplements, and lifestyle changes, along with recipes, to help you begin your personalized healing journey.
I scored highest for the “Stressed Gut”, so I am currently making changes to my diet and supplement regimen, as well as making sure to de-stress every day. In just a week’s time, I have already starting seeing changes with my cravings, skin issues, and that “after-dinner-bloated” feeling.
I can’t recommend this book enough, whether you are dealing with serious health challenges or just want to lose a few pounds – this book will provide you with a doable plan that will help you heal your gut and get your health (and energy) back!
Go with your gut, and get this book 😉
