New Year New You: Exercise for 20 Minutes

New Year New You

Today’s second habit doesn’t require a lot of time, but it can reap great rewards.

It’s exercise!

You’ve heard it over and over, but it’s true.  Consistent exercise is a must if you want to live a healthy life.  Living a sedentary life is one of the worst things you could do for your health.  We were made to move.  You know the saying – “An object in motion stays in motion and an object at rest stays at rest.”  The key is to become that object in motion.

If you’re not in the habit of working out, this one will be a greater challenge for you.  That’s what this whole New Year New You challenge is all about – creating healthy habits.

That’s why I’m challenging you to commit to just 20 minutes of movement every day for the next two weeks.  Everybody can find 20 minutes in their schedule!  If not, you need to reevaluate your schedule! 😉  And if you need a reason to get moving, here are 3!

Find a time that works for you, write it on your calendar, and get moving!

If you’re new to exercising or it’s been a while since you’ve exercised regularly, start with a simple routine:

  • Walking for 20 minutes around your neighborhood or on a treadmill
  • 20 minutes of low impact exercises
  • A 20 minute workout video for beginners
  • 20 minutes of strength training for beginners

Exercising doesn’t have to be complicated.  It just has to be consistent.

It is important to do a variety of exercises for the most benefit.  Combine aerobics, strength training, and stretching for a well-rounded program each week.  I’ve written before about some of my favorite routines and videos that I love.  My favorite way to workout is with free YouTube videos – there are SO many to choose from, and you can do them anytime in the comfort of your own home regardless of the weather!

If you’re more of a social butterfly, join a gym, sign up for a class that interests you, or workout with a friend.  Exercising in these environments helps the time pass quickly, and it also helps to keep you accountable.
