I am a big believer in supplements. They have made a huge difference in the way I feel, particularly with my energy levels, digestion, and overall well being. I certainly feel a difference when I don’t take them. Not all supplements are created equal, but thankfully there are a number of high quality supplement brands available today from companies who care about the quality and source of their ingredients. The supplements I use are from companies that I have researched, and I have found the ingredients to be both pure and effective. I make it a point to take at least four supplements every day. I call these the “Foundational Four”. In addition, there are a number of other supplements that I take depending on my current health needs.
Here is what I take for the Foundational Four*:
I’m currently taking the Kind Organics Women’s Once Daily Multi from Garden of Life. These are made using organic whole food ingredients. I like the convenience of taking only one tablet a day, and this multivitamin boasts an impressive ingredient list. Another multi that I’ve used with great success is New Chapter’s Perfect Prenatal. I like prenatal vitamins even when I’m not pregnant as they offer additional folic acid, which is essential during the child bearing years. It is also made with organic whole food ingredients. Love these!
2) Omega Fatty Acids
I love Nordic Naturals. They are one of the top companies for providing high quality, purified fish oil. I use their Complete Omega Xtra, as it provides omega 3, 6, and 9 fats that are essential for heart, brain, and skin health. For the longest time I couldn’t seem to grow my hair past my shoulders until I began taking this supplement. After taking this, my hair grew quickly and is now down to the middle of my back! Glowing skin and fast growing hair just seem to be added bonuses of this impressive supplement.
These have been essential for me in healing my gut after years of antibiotic use as a young adult. They have also helped restore my digestive health after a diagnosis of a gluten allergy. Probiotics are important for restoring a healthy gut flora (a fancy term for bacteria in our intestines), keeping the bad bacteria in check with good bacteria. Probiotics aid our immune system by combating viruses and bacteria that can enter our system. These are a definite must for traveling as well. I like Jarro-dophilus EPS, because they provide a broad spectrum of healthy bacteria and they are shelf stable (which means you don’t have to refrigerate these). There is another award-winning brand called Dr. Ohhira’s Essential Formula, which are very high quality as well. They are a bit more expensive though.
4) Calcium/Magnesium/Vitamin D
These three create a trifecta for healthy bones. It is important to take these together, as they work synergistically. It is so important to make sure to get adequate levels of magnesium, as it is responsible for numerous functions in the body. I enjoy Solgar Calcium/Magnesium liquid. It tastes like strawberry yogurt. Check out what one of the leading experts on magnesium has to say about this unsung hero of the mineral world.
