Flu Season Fixes

Fluseasonfixes

With back-to-school germs floating around in the air and colder temperatures soon on the horizon, it’s a good idea to be prepared for the flu season (which also includes other viruses, colds, and bugs).

Here are just a few things you and your family can do to protect yourselves from whatever the “sickness du jour” might be!

1) Wash Your Hands

There is nothing quite as protective and preventative as washing your hands with good ole’ soap and water.  Many companies market anti-bacterial soaps, many of which contain harmful and toxic ingredients such as triclosan.  These chemicals have been linked to cancer and have also contributed to the rise of antibiotic resistant bacteria.  All you need is a basic soap, like castile soap, and a good scrubbing with warm water, which kills any bacteria which might be on your hands.  I make a habit of washing my hands the minute we return from running errands or being out and about.  I have my boys do the same thing.

And if you are not able to wash your hands, an all-natural hand sanitizer is the next best thing.  Look for one that contains organic ethanol and anti-bacterial essential oils like peppermint and lavender (they smell wonderful too!).  I like this one from EO.

Washing your hands is your first line of defense.

2) Use a Nasal RinseSimply Saline

I like to think of a nasal rinse as the nose’s equivalent of washing hands.  A saline solution is gentle on the nasal passages, and it clears away dirt, debris, and bacteria that you’ve breathed in during the day.  I do this at night before going to bed.  You can either use a neti pot, or a ready-made saline solution.  I like Simply Saline for its convenience, which makes me more likely to use it!

Hand washing and a good nasal rinse are very effective at killing germs and keeping you healthy during flu season.

3) Protect Yourself with Vitamins C & D

Emergen-CBoth vitamin C and vitamin D are essential nutrients for bolstering the immune system and fighting off germs.  During flu season, it’s important to make sure you are getting plenty of both.  One of my favorite products for my family is Emergen-C Immune Plus, which contains 1,000 mg of C and 1,000 iu of D.  It also contains B vitamins, zinc, antioxidants, and electrolytes. This is a great supplement to have on hand to add to water or juice, and it is very effective.  Even my boys love it!
