I love to have a smoothie after a good, hard workout.  It feels like a decadent reward, but it actually helps with muscle recovery and preventing soreness.  It’s also a good way to replenish lost nutrients and electrolytes.

My Chocolate Protein smoothie tastes better than a Frosty, and it’s actually good for you!  You will definitely look forward to your daily workout if you can enjoy this smoothie afterward.  And even if you haven’t worked out, this makes a great afternoon snack or meal replacement.  Simply customize the ingredients depending on when you’re having it.

Simply throw the ingredients into your blender and whirl away!  I love using my NutriBullet, because it makes clean-up a breeze.

The banana is great for adding potassium and electrolytes (simply slice and freeze 1 banana for this recipe), the almond butter adds a dose of healthy fat (which is very satisfying and will keep you full), the raw cacao powder is loaded with beneficial antioxidants and minerals, and the TrimShake adds a great dose of clean whey protein and the herb ashwaghanda, which helps to balance cortisol levels and blood sugar (it’s also good for the thyroid and helping to balance hormones).  TrimShake is my favorite protein powder and it tastes incredible (not at all chalky!).  I used the vanilla flavor in this recipe.

Finally I add about 10-12 oz. of unsweetened almond milk (another great source of protein and plant-based calcium).  Blend away and enjoy (you’ll think you’re having a milkshake from a fancy restaurant).  And to boost the nutritional content even more, try adding a handful of frozen spinach or kale and 1 Tablespoon of chia seeds (they don’t change the flavor at all and will give you a healthy dose of greens and omega-3 fats!).  If you try it, let me know what you think!
